Art as an act of slowing down

In today's fast-paced world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle, however, taking the time to slow down and appreciate the beauty, creativity and artistic expression is more important than ever. There are countless ways to incorporate art and creativity into your life and find moments of peace and happiness.

How does slowing down with art impact joy?

Engaging with art as a viewer or as the creative, as we know, has a positive impact on well-being, not to mention mental health. By taking the time to appreciate a beautiful object or create something with your own hands, you can reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and boost your mood. This focus on the present moment can bring a sense of joy and contentment in the chaos we allow to creep into everyday life.

Incorporating art or craft into your daily routine?

There are many simple ways to slow down and enjoy art in your daily life. You can start by setting aside a few minutes each day to sketch, knit, build, plant.... The point is to disrupt the habit of speeding through life without even noticing it. We consume so much data every hour, the act of creation is a mindful step back from the din and a way to give back to the world your tangible take on the process of life. Even if you aren't comfortable with the act of making something, try a cooking class, or a dance class, or maybe an hour at a local gallery. The point isn't to be critical, but to just be. Being present is the point and will do wonders for your attention span.

How can art help you find joy in the moment?

Art has the power to transport us to another world and evoke a wide range of emotions. And it isn't all beautiful either. Sometimes it is disgust or sorrow. Whether you love it or hate it, the artist caused you to feel something you might not have expected to feel. Feel that feeling. What is it that creates a reaction in you? Sit with it and reflect on it. Art has the ability to make us feel more connected to the world and people around us.

And perhaps more so when we make the thing ourselves. I recently started working on a blanket. It is what the art world would consider "craft" (a functional item) versus art. But I don't care. Every time I look at it, I am shocked that it continues to get larger, that it could be so warm, that it is different than anything I have seen at a store or online. It makes me smile. It pulls me away from my screens and it adds a little something to my home that makes it feel like home. And that is why I create- to slow down and indulge in the beauty of this life. It is a generous gift and I am grateful to the creator who inspires me daily to create.

So, the next time you think about it,  take a moment to slow down. doodle something on the page, listen to your favorite piece of music. Whether you're creating something new or simply admiring the work of others, you may be surprised at the joy this slower moment can bring.
